Exosmosis is the net movement of water molecules out of a cell across a selectively permeable membrane when the cell is placed in a hypertonic solution (the surrounding solution has lower water potential / higher solute concentration). Water moves from the region where water potential is higher (inside the cell) to where it is lower (outside). The cell loses water, becomes flaccid (plant cells) or shrinks; extreme loss can lead to plasmolysis in plant cells.
Contrast with endosmosis (water entering a cell in hypotonic conditions) and isotonic conditions (no net movement). Exosmosis is a passive process driven by differences in water potential and does not require cellular energy.
